Long Punches and Short Elbows of Iron Fist

Suddenly someone attacks you with wild punches! What do you do? Mantis Boxing has a list of techniques called "All the Interconnected Hands Which Defeat Chaotic Hands." This is a list of 21 techniques to use when the opponent attacks chaotically. At the top of the list is interconnected breaking punch.

The interconnected breaking fist.

He attacks chaotically. I hold my two fists tightly and attack with colliding and return with yang. It hooks, presses and sticks then apply the breaking punch straight to his center.

Adopt yourself to the changing circumstances freely moving high or low. This is the central gate’s wondrous method.

The idea here is that when someone attacks you with a wild or chaotic attack you can counter with the interconnected breaking punch. In other words you attack with the right hand, as your right hand makes contact with the enemy it, "Hooks, presses and sticks," and we then use the other hand to strike.
"Return with yang" means that I pull my fist back with the palm up.

Initiating the Attack

Mantis Boxing also has Eighteen Essential Techniques to Apply on Initial Engagement. This is a list of Eighteen techniques that can be used to start an attack.

This list also has the technique "interconnected breaking punch."  Initiating the attack as well as for responding to a chaotic attack both can use this essential move "interconnect breaking punch."

Iron Fist

Iron Fist of Li Kunshan is a form that begins with the long attacks of "interconnected breaking punch" and follows with the short strikes of "sky facing elbow" and "sitting elbow."

Li Kunshan is shown here at 77 years old countering a low strike with a high strike.

The first four moves of the solo form Iron Fist. Notice how the long punches are suddenly followed by the short striking elbows.

Iron Fist Applied

Joe squares off against Jennifer.

Joe has already punched Jennifer. She grabs his hand with her right

and punches with her left knuckle to Joe's left eye.

Joe blocks.

Jennifer grabs Joe's block. Notice that she pulled his first strike down to her waist, but she doesn't pull down his second strike.

Jennifer steps in with her left foot and raises her elbow up. This is called the "sky facing elbow." Applied with a large force it can seriously injure Joe's elbow joint.

Joe takes control of his elbow by not allowing Jennifer to push it up. She steps behind Joe's foot before he can get away.

She and her elbow "sit down" together.

Joe can avoid injury by sinking down with Jennifer and keeping his elbow attached to hers.

Jennifer pulls her elbow out.

Jennifer finishes with an elbow smash to Joe's jaw or neck.

By combining long, short, high and low the methods of Iron Fist manage to overcome the opponent
